From the days when judges had time for extra-curricular pursuits, a photograph of Richard Cherry, Lord Justice of Appeal in Ireland (1909-1914) and later Lord Chief Justice of Ireland (1914-16) ringing the bells at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, which appeared in the Sketch of 19 December 1909.

Described by the Westminster Gazette as one of the most experienced campanologists of his generation, Cherry took up the pursuit as a youth in the old Protestant Cathedral in Waterford and, later, after moving to Dublin, was a constant change-ringer in the belfry of St Patrick’s Cathedral(conveniently close to the Four Courts) for over thirty years.

Cherry described bell-ringing as ‘one of the pleasantest and most invigorating of recreations.’ His funeral service of 1923 was held at St Patrick’s, and, in 2023, the bells were rung there to mark the centenary of his death.
