From the beginning, legal proceedings in the Four Courts tended to attract a large number of interested spectators – if only to benefit from the warmth of the fires lit in each court! Some trials, such as that of the Irish politician Daniel O’Connell in 1844, were even featured in the international press.
Even the more obscure trials in courts outside the Four Courts contain useful information about the society of the day – and human nature.
