Solicitor Charged with Unheard-Of Cruelties to Teenage Daughter, 1840

A remarkable story from the College Street Magistrates’ Court, Dublin, 1840, involving cruel treatment by a solicitor and sub-sheriff of Dublin, John Robert Malone, of his teenage daughter.

Locked in her room at 5 Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin, without change of dress, fire or candle, she had to obtain food on a string sent up to her from the outside, and drink through the keyhole of her door using a piece of paper as a funnel.

The story caused great scandal in Dublin, but died down after a reconciliation was arranged between father and daughter and Miss Malone returned home to – one hopes- better treatment.

This was not to be the last time that Dublin newspaper-readers encountered John Robert Malone!

Clipping from the London Evening Standard, 8 December 1840.
